Music Track Signups

Arisia 2017 Music Track has a selection of workshops and other sessions that require advanced signup.

You can sign up for any of these at the con, by going to the Program Nexus (3W) and completing the paper signup form for the desired session.

Workshops

Below is our list of workshops for Arisia '17. Workshops allow a limited number of attendees, and that limit is noted below. Please sign up prior to each one, by visiting the Program Nexus (3W).

Hindi-Based Devotional Chants
When: Saturday, 10:00 AM to 11:15 AM
Where: Paine (2W)
Led by: Harriotte Hurie Ranvig
Limited to: 25 people

Harriotte will teach some simple Hindi-based devotional chants with call and response. We might also warm up first with a bit of vocal droning with some plucked drone instruments, after five minutes of instruction in same. The drone (of the tonic and fifth) orients the singer as the horizon does a pilot. Try chanting/singing with it for the joy of discovery!

The Strong Sound
When: Saturday, 11:30 AM to 12:45 PM
Where: Paine (2W)
Led by: Anabel Graetz
Limited to: 20 people

Sing and be heard without strain. Lead songs with confidence. Learn to sing with a loud, clear voice without harming your throat. Improve your range and increase your vocal stamina. This workshop is an introduction to Anabel’s vocal and centered breathing technique. Helpful for all singers.

The Centered Breath
When: Sunday, 7:00 PM to 8:15 PM
Where: Bulfinch (3W)
Led by: Anabel Graetz
Limited to: 25 people

A workshop for actors, singers, storytellers and anyone who speaks. Good breathing technique is essential to being easily heard, to speaking or singing for long periods, and to singing in tune. So come and learn to master your breath and be at your best for every performance or presentation.

Hands-on (or Hands-off) Theremin Workshop
When: Sunday, 8:30 PM to 9:45 PM
Where: Bulfinch (3W)
Led by: Marnen Laibow-Koser
Limited to: 5 people

The theremin is played by proximity sensing, the player never touches the instrument. You’ve heard its spooky noises in horror and SF movies, but there’s so much more that it can do! In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the basics of theremin technique and will be able to experiment with this unusual instrument. Previous musical training is helpful but not required. If you have your own theremin, please bring it!

Other Sessions Requiring Signup

We have two sessions besides our workshops that require signup. Note all attendees are welcome, and do not need to sign up; only performers/contestants need to sign up, by visiting the Program Nexus (3W).

Open Mic Featuring Gwendolyn Grace
What: A concert
When: Saturday, 4:00 PM to 5:15 PM
Where: Paine (2W)
MC: Jeff Keller
Limited to: 12-15 performers

A showcase of prepared songs, with a mini-set or two from our featured artist. Other interested performers should sign up in advance at the Program Nexus; one song per performer. We'll probably have time for about a dozen performers, not counting Gwen.

Doom, Gloom, and Despondency
What: A song competition
When: Sunday, 4:00 PM to 5:15 PM
Where: Burroughs (3E)
MC: Jeremy Kessler
Limited to: 12 contestants

A serious, formal, thematic, judged song contest. Attendees are expected to maintain a solemn aspect (e.g., dark clothes, long face, and soft, respectful speech). In the event of a breach of decorum (e.g., laughter), the offender will be evicted for the duration of the current song—and the singer will receive bonus points! All attendees welcome; contestants should sign up in advance.
